Breaking the Rules

One of the general rules of underwater photography is not to shoot your subjects from above. Rather, it is preferred to get to the level of your subject or to shoot from below. It's not always possible or easy, though, to get into the ideal shooting position; and sometimes you just need to break the rules for a good shot. I took this image of a fireworks anemone the other week at Loch Fyne. Without shooting from above, it wouldn't have been impossible to show the fantastic concentric rings or the central core of the animal. So by all means follow the rules, but don't follow them so rigidly that you miss out on a good photo opportunity.
