To give you an idea of its size, the sea urchin to the left on the rock is about the size of a clenched fist. Spiny starfish can measure up to around 80cm in diameter and they have spines on each of their 5 legs. I saw both  at the same St Abbs dive site,  Black Carr.This is the most recent one and we came across it sitting out in the open in a patch of sand in about 10m. It was quite small so we think it was a juvenile. There is some wreckage at Ebb Carrs of the Alfred Erlandsen, which includes a boiler and lots of beams. The Alfred Erlandsen went down in 1907 and, tragically, all 16 crew perished. Apparently, the sole survivor was a Great Dane (Carro) which was found on the cliffs. Capernwray is an inland dive site (and centre), a freshwater filled quarry. Safe bet on the west coast.  We went to Loch Goil and had two lengthy dives, each over an hour. Max depth was around 18m both times and in between we had the customary bacon rolls. They like to keep their distance from a diver and if you edge nearer, they swim off a bit, too. They also seem to like to swim in a large circle around you rather than away from you.
